Torrevieja is located next to the sea in the south of the Valencian Community. It is surrounded by two large natural saltwater lagoons that form the well known "Salterns of Torrevieja", which are considered to be the biggest in Europe and second in the world. Alicante is the provincial capital and is about 47 Kms away, the international airports of El Altet and San Javier are about 35 Kms away.

In recent years Torrevieja has become a first-class tourist location, it boasts 360 days of sun a year and an average temperature of 18°C. There are many beautiful beaches, squares, walks, parks, gardens and other natural beauty spots (Ferriz), as well as some wonderful historical monuments such as the "Modernist Casino" which dates from the beginning of the century and has a famous hall in the mozarabic style; the "Recinto de las Eras de la Sal" an open, air theatre.
Torrevieja is also well known for for its outstanding port, the remains of which can still be seen in La Mata, called the embarcadero romano, or Roman docks. Along the coast are the ancient watchtowers called El Moro and La Mata, used in the Middle Ages to warn the coastal inhabitants of attacks by Barbary pirates.
One of the main attractions to Torrevieja are the variety of festivals which take place every month. Some of the most popular events in Spain are the Carnivals in which thousands of people join in, forming a light show of colour, satire and good humour. The Holy Week attracts lots of people into the streets, converting these into huge paths of colour penance and popular religiosity. Good Friday at night is one of the most venerated and admired festivals on the spanish eastern coast.
There is also an aqua park nearby which is open from June through to September, plus the largest weekly market in Spain is held in Torrevieja every Friday.

La Mata
|

|
|
La Mata is a smaller town, just north of the apartment , with a nice square, and a wooden boardwalk along the beach front with cafes and restaurants behind it. There are miles of beach to walk along, and nearby is the national parkland. There is a market on Wednesdays.

Places to visit in the vicinity include the cities of Alicante to the north and the historic Cartagena in the south. There are several golf courses. Three are just to the south of Torrevieja and there is another inland from Alicante. You can use the motorway to travel north of Alicante to the Terramitica theme park and the big aqua park. The city of Elche, inland from Torrevieja is renowned for its palm trees and is also boasts the biggest shoe shop in Europe!
It is possible to visit an open air market on any day of the week by visiting the surrounding towns and villages.

The salt lakes and their surrounding areas are protected land, giving a haven to the many birds and wildlife that visit them each year. The “pink” lake at Torreta III is visited by many people who bathe in the lake and apply the mud for its reputed help with rheumatics etc.

There are three golf courses just to the south of Torrevieja, Villa Martin, Campoamor, and Las Ramblas, and another course, La Finca, is just a little way inland . A new driving range has been build in the Torrevieja.

If you happen to get bored in the middle of the night, there is always the Pacha nightclub, which stays open until about 8 in the morning
